Hawaiian Totems

These guys are the guardians of the City of Refuge in Kona, Hawaii.  Also know as Puuhonua O Honaunau, in Hawaiian, it offered sanctuary to those in need as churches used to in the Middle Ages; not just food and water, but protection from prosecution.

  1. These are fantastic. I did a post a while back about totem poles in Canada and Japan and asked readers where else they had been seen. All kinds of spots came up but I don’t recall Kona. Thanks for this!
